Alpha heroes

Posted by Arianna Hart - May 24th, 2007

I’m sure I’ve blogged about this before, but I have a thing for Alpha heroes. Which is really funny when you consider my husband is ANYTHING but an Alpha male. Maybe that’s why I like the fictional ones so much.

In real life, I don’t know if I could tolerate someone who was as stubborn as me and as strong willed. Scratch that. My husband is just as stubborn and strong willed, he just goes about it differently. While I jump up and down and scream my annoyance, he calmly goes about his business and still gets his own way. Kind of like erosion. He’ll wear you down eventually and you won’t even know it.

When I think Alpha, I think warrior, the raging storm, the fierce competetor. I think it’s an Alpha heroine’s job to turn that power to good, so to speak. He uses his warrior skills to protect her–even if she doesn’t need it– his anger is because someone threatens the ones he loves, and he competes so fiercely to win her and prove his worth.

Sigh.

But I bet he probably still doesn’t pick up his socks or remember to put his cereal bowl in the sink.

I remember reading a poem in high school about a man who was enamoured with the medieval times. All he could think about was how great they must have been. I remember the poem was slightly cynical in that it mentioned how the reality of no running water and lack of creature comforts was forgotten in the midst of the romanticism of the chivalry and paegentry of the times.

In my opinion, the poet missed the whole point! We imagine different things because we like to get lost in the idealism of them. I wouldn’t want to marry an Alpha hero, I love my husband and wouldn’t change him for all the rock-hard abs in the world. But I love to write about the men with those abs and the daring deeds they do.

So what if they aren’t real? Reality is only for those who lack imagination anyway!
