Before Faylene could protest, they were out of the bedroom window and he began climbing up the building with her slung over his shoulder.

“At least tell me your name.” Faylene tried to right her spinning world as the ground disappeared rapidly beneath her.

The musky smell of him hit her hard. A shot of lust went through her like a lightning bolt. It occurred to her that she was only in a pair of oversized men’s boxer shorts and a thin tank top with not a stitch of underwear on. She was instantly conscious of the thin cotton of her shorts being the only thing separating her from his shoulder.

“Just call me Thad. We’ll have formal introductions later,” he grunted as he climbed onto the roof of her apartment building and set her on her feet.

“There they are! On the roof!” A shout came from the ground below, and bullets whizzed by Faylene’s head.

“Run!” Thad grabbed her arm and pulled her across the rooftop, hauling her along when she stumbled.

Faylene tried to keep up with Thad as he dodged objects she could barely see in the dark. They were rapidly running out of room when another blaze of fire flared up right behind them.

“Get ready to jump!” he shouted as they came to the edge of her building.

“Jump? Are you out of your mind? It’s at least three meters between buildings, I can’t jump that far!”

The words had barely left her mouth before she went flying through the air. She didn’t dare look down to see if they were going to make it to the neighboring building, but squeezed her eyes closed. The impact of their landing jolted the breath out of her lungs, but Thad didn’t give her time to recover before he pulled her up again.

“Come on, we’ll take the fire escape to the street and get away through the tunnels.”

Faylene didn’t even bother asking what tunnels. She needed all her air to keep up with him and escape the lunatics that were throwing firebombs at her.

The darkness of the night hid the ground below them and Faylene felt a shiver of fear go through her as they climbed down. It was probably a good thing she couldn’t see how far up they were. She wasn’t real fond of heights, but she was less fond of bullets and being burnt alive.

“This way.” Thad grabbed her hand, his much larger one swallowing hers up. A flash of heat shot through her followed by a brief glimpse of pain. Faylene gasped at the conflicting sensations swirling through her head before he cut off the connection. Something had hurt this man at a bone deep level. Hurt him so badly that even when he was shielded and running for his life, that pain was still with him.

Thad led her to a manhole cover that he lifted with an inhuman display of strength. Faylene watched in awe as his muscles jumped and bulged as he hefted the heavy cover.

“Down there, quickly.”

Faylene scrambled down a rusty ladder bolted to the side of the tunnel. She didn’t even want to think about what she was stepping in with bare feet. When she got to the bottom rung she hesitated. God only knew what was waiting for her on the ground.

There was a grating of metal on metal and the last sliver of light was extinguished. A brush of air swirled by her and Faylene caught the smell of Thad briefly before she felt hands on her hips.

“I’ll carry you, this is no place to be walking in bare feet.”

“How’d you get down here so fast?” Faylene asked. His hands on her hips sent a jolt of lust straight to her crotch.

“I jumped,” he said simply. “Come on, I’ll take us someplace safe and get you some suitable clothes.”

He jumped? It was at least two meters down and he’d landed without a sound?
